Laparoscopic surgery, also known as “minimally-invasive surgery,” allows the surgeon to perform an operation utilizing three to six incisions that are only half an inch to one inch in size rather than one larger incision. The surgeon will insert a tube (or tubes) with a tiny camera and specially-designed surgical instruments to perform the procedure.
There are several advantages of this minimally-invasive or laparoscopic surgical approach:
- Outpatient or short-stay hospitalization
- Less blood loss
- Less injury to tissue
- Less post-operative pain
- Fewer and smaller scars
- Faster recovery
