The Benefits of Vascular Surgery

Vascular surgeons are medical specialists with additional training in the circulatory and lymphatic systems. The doctors at Vascular Surgical Associates diagnose and treat conditions involving your veins, arteries, or lymphatic vessels. Many of our patients seek vascular help for varicose veins, poor circulation, or leg cramping and swelling.

In many cases, vascular surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that increases mobility and reduces discomfort through improved circulation. Vascular procedures can also decrease leg ulcers and other complications of varicose veins and provide access to dialysis treatments. For patients at high risk of vascular disease due to diabetes or high blood pressure, surgery can often reduce long-term health risks of serious complications such as a heart attack or stroke.

We’re proud to offer state-of-the-art vascular care to residents of Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, and to those traveling from outside the Tri-State area. Our collaborative, multidisciplinary approach with primary care providers and other specialists ensures the best treatment outcomes and holistic rehabilitation so you can get back to doing what you love. If you’ve been referred to a vascular specialist or you have questions about your circulation, please call us today. We’re happy to answer any questions and discuss the possible next steps in your treatment plan.

Testimonials

“I was referred to Dr. Patterson by my GP when it was determined my Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm required surgery. He thoroughly explained the proposed surgery, answered all my questions and gave me literature which further explained the endovascular treatment he would use. The day of the surgery he met with me and my family prior to the surgery explaining the surgical procedure and answering any last minute questions we had. My follow-up appointment with him was timely, cordial and informative. Thank you Dr. Patterson. You and your team are to be commended!”
“Dr. Martin performed a tricky surgery to get the blockage open in my legs after my heart attack. She is very friendly and explains everything she does. If it wasn't for her talent I may have been minus a leg by now. I have follow up appointments with her in Evansville. I highly recommend her to anyone with a complicated heart problem, she is the BEST!”

Better Imaging, Faster Recovery

Thanks to modern medical advancements, vascular surgery is safer, less invasive, and more effective than ever before. We utilize the Siemens ACUSON Sequoia™ ultrasound system, recognized as the industry leader in advanced imaging, and the state-of-the-art bi-directional Doppler Parks Flo-Lab arterial machines. These advanced tools assist in our surgical planning so we can understand your unique vascular anatomy. Whenever possible, we use ultrasound guidance, laser therapy, and injections to accelerate your recovery time.

When more complex interventions are necessary, we provide a holistic treatment plan that prioritizes durability and rehabilitation.

Preparation Tips for Your Vascular Screening

Patient-First Care

Whether you’re seeing a vascular surgeon to begin dialysis treatment or in conjunction with treatment from your podiatrist, we recognize the importance of collaboration with all of your care providers.

We work in close consultation with your other doctors, anesthesiologists, and rehabilitation specialists to ensure you’re receiving the most effective treatment. Your vascular health is a core component of your overall well-being.

Improving Quality of Life

Early intervention with vascular conditions can drastically improve your quality of life and prevent serious complications including blood clots, strokes, or infection and limb loss. While it’s true that exercise and a heart-healthy diet can improve your vascular health, some underlying conditions need medical treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to recover from vascular surgery?

For some minimally invasive treatments, such as endovenous laser treatment, patients are able to walk out of the office following the procedure and resume normal activities within a few days. More complex procedures may require 6-8 weeks of recovery or longer. Your doctor will discuss your recovery and rehabilitation timeline.

What are signs that I should see a vascular specialist?

If you have chronic leg pain, swelling, or discolored veins, these are common symptoms that you may have circulation issues. Other health conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of vascular disease can also prompt you to see a vascular specialist. For specific advice, please consult with your primary care physician.

Does surgery cure varicose veins?

Our board-certified vascular surgeons offer a variety of clinically proven, minimally invasive techniques for removing varicose veins. It’s important to note that varicose veins are not an illness to be cured; it’s a progressive condition that requires an ongoing plan for symptom management.

Do you treat poor circulation in feet?

Yes, many vascular surgical procedures will improve circulation in your lower extremities. If you have heaviness, swelling, or tingling in your feet, please consult with your physician about the possibility of vascular treatment.

Is a hospital stay required for vascular surgery?

Complex vascular procedures may require a hospital stay of several days, but most of your recovery will be at home. Our team will guide you in a personalized rehabilitation plan.

Is there a Vascular Surgery Associate near me?

Our vascular surgeons provide care at our Deaconess Midtown, St. Vincent East, and Deaconess Gateway locations. Please call (812) 424-8231 to schedule your appointment.
