Introducing Dr. Samir Gupta

  • November 9, 2021
  •  by Alissa McMillan

We are thrilled to announce Dr. Samir Gupta as the latest addition to the Evansville Surgical Associates team! Dr. Gupta earned his bachelor’s in chemistry as well as his medical degree from the University of Chicago.

He began his residency at the University of Florida in Gainesville and completed it at Butterworth Hospital, now Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He qualified as a fellow in critical care during that time and had the opportunity to study for an extra year.

What Dr. Gupta Enjoys Most About Being a Surgeon

While Dr. Gupta spent a lot of time studying critical care and trauma during his residency, he is most passionate about general care. His previous studies have allowed him to be more flexible during difficult situations in the operating room when performing general surgery.

I just enjoy surgery immensely. It’s a career choice, but it’s not just an occupation — it’s a true north for me. I know how to take care of really sick people and really complex problems, and I enjoy that immensely. For me, the major enjoyment of surgery is not just the technical side but taking care of patients and seeing that they do well.

How He Feels About Joining Evansville Surgical Associates

Dr. Gupta is excited to be joining Evansville Surgical Associates with our 50+ years of experience serving the community. In fact, he has a special connection to our practice. With 25 years of his own surgical experience, Dr. Gupta has actually trained a few of our surgeons.

“That’s how I came to know about Evansville Surgical,” he explains. “These are some of the best surgeons I’ve trained when I was in private practice with a university affiliation. So I’m not coming into this fresh out of residency or medical school. I’m coming in knowing exactly what I’m stepping into.”

Dr. Gupta has spent the past six years at Rush University, in Chicago, teaching residents as well as designing emergency and critical care services for patients. For him, coming to Evansville is a pleasant change of pace.

“Coming here is a breath of fresh air. It’s an independent surgical practice, which is at the heart of the broad variety of general surgery that I like to do. This was a natural fit for me.”

His Unique Perspective

Dr. Gupta has experience in a wide variety of medical settings, allowing him to stay on the cutting edge of general surgery. He’s worked in:

  • Private practice
  • Corporate practice
  • University practice
  • Resident training

He explains how one of the benefits of Evansville Surgical Associates is our status as an independent surgical group, which has allowed us to stay flexible and at the forefront of medical advances. Dr. Gupta aims to combine both sets of experience to improve care and outcomes for our patients even more.

What I bring is a whole lot of experience,” says Dr. Gupta. “I’ve been out of residency for a long time and have worked in multiple types of practices and with specialists. What I hope to bring is a fresh perspective on how we provide care. Hopefully, as I learn from the Evansville surgeons, they’ll learn from me about providing even safer, better surgery with even more patient focus.

What Dr. Samir Gupta Wants Patients to Know About Him

Dr. Samir Gupta strives to successfully communicate the reasons behind his recommendations and advice. He understands that patients don’t have the same knowledge as him, so it’s his responsibility to help them understand and earn their trust. In the end, he believes this results in the best possible outcome for patients.

My job and what I’ve learned is that we’re a team. The patient, myself, and everyone around them is a team. This can include family sometimes. I look at myself as a partner that helps them get to where they need to go. The nice thing about being a surgeon is that it’s not just giving medicine for high blood pressure and checking it the next month. When I do something, it’s going to affect their lives, so my philosophy is that we’re partners in that.

How He Spends His Free Time

Dr. Gupta and his wife enjoy waterskiing and watching movies together with their three kids. They love to travel and enjoy planning their trips around outdoor activities such as hiking and biking. He’s also a big fan of Scandinavian and American detective fiction.
