Am I at Risk for Breast Cancer and What Can Be Done About It?

  • July 5, 2022
  •  by Alissa McMillan

The risk of developing breast cancer can vary from person to person. However, there are some common factors that can increase your risk and a few that might surprise you. But more important than knowing the risk factors for breast cancer is knowing where to receive the life-saving treatment that you need.

Common risk factors for breast cancer include your sex, age, family history, and race/ethnicity. At Evansville Surgical Associate, we offer the latest surgical options such as Sirius Pintuition to treat your breast cancer. We also have a number of surgeons who have specialized in breast cancer surgery.

Am I at Risk for Breast Cancer?

Everyone’s risk of developing breast cancer is different. For instance, simply being a woman puts you at a higher risk of breast cancer (although men can develop it in rare cases). On the other hand, there are lifestyle choices that also increase the risk such as not being physically active and smoking tobacco products.

Gender

According to BreastCancer.org, females have a higher risk of developing breast cancer than males. According to their data, there have been 266,120 new cases of invasive and 63,960 cases of non-invasive breast cancer reported as of June 2022.

Age

Age is one of the most important breast cancer risk factors. While less of a risk when you’re younger, the risk of breast cancer increases as you get older. This is especially true around the age of 55 and older. Two out of three invasive breast cancers are found in women of this age range.

Family History

A family history of breast cancer can be an important indicator of your own personal risk. Simply having a mother, sister, or daughter who has been diagnosed with breast cancer doubles your own risk.

Genetics

Similar to a family history of breast cancer, your risk can also increase on a genetic level. This is because some cases of the disease are thought to be the result of abnormal genes that have been passed on from parent to child.

Personal History

You have an increased breast cancer risk if you have had it in the past. In these cases, you are likely to develop new cancer in your other breast or on a different part of the same breast.

Race/Ethnicity

White women face a slightly more increased risk of developing breast cancers than those in the Black, Hispanic, and Asian communities. However, breast cancer cases in Black women tend to be much more aggressive and start at a younger age.

Not Enough Vitamin D

Research suggests that women who don’t get enough vitamin D may have a high risk for breast cancer later on. While more study is needed, experts suspect that it may help control the normal growth of cells, prevent the growth of abnormal cells, and reduce your risk of breast cancer.

Not Enough Exercise

Being physically active does wonders for your health including reducing your risk of breast cancer. According to medical research, getting four to seven hours of moderate to intense exercise per week can reduce your risk of the disease.

Smoking

Smoking has been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer in premenopausal women. Heavy exposure to second-hand smoke may also be connected to breast cancer risks in postmenopausal women.

How It Works

Powered by GPSDetect, the Sirius Pintuition uses state-of-the-art software to provide navigational guidance for locating and removing tumors in the breast. This is thanks to wire-free localization technology that offers visual and audio feedback for direction guidance in real-time with even greater precision.

The secret is the Pintuition Seed. This tiny but powerful magnet marks the tumor and makes it easy for your surgeon to find. This is especially helpful in the earliest stages of development when they’re hardest to detect. With the Pintuition Seed, our surgeons can easily find the tumor and remove it from any direction.
