Surgical technology is always advancing to provide patients with more options, less pain, and less stress. At Evansville Surgical Associates, we strive to be early adopters of new technology in order to provide the highest quality of care to our patients. That’s why we’re excited to announce our adoption of Sirius Pintuition breast cancer treatment this Women’s Health Month.
We are proud that three of our surgeons are currently qualified to perform this type of breast cancer surgery. The Sirius Pintuition works thanks to a special “seed” and advanced navigation software that allows surgeons to locate the tumor without the need for metal wire. It benefits surgeons and patients by providing a less invasive way to locate and remove breast cancer at its earliest stages more easily.

Sirius Pintuition – Wire-Free Navigation for Breast-Conserving Surgery

Breast cancer tumors caught at an early stage often can’t be seen or felt during surgery. This requires surgeons to insert a thin wire into the breast to find the exact area that needs to be removed. While helpful for locating and removing tumors, this form of surgery can be more invasive, requires longer wait times, and can be more painful for patients.
Sirius Pintuition wire-free navigation for breast-conserving surgery removes the need for wires and long wait times. Instead of wire, it uses a tiny seed that’s placed at the site of the tumor at your convenience.
This provides you with:
- Reduced pain
- More scheduling flexibility
- Reduced wait times
- Less stress
Sirius Pintuition allows our surgeons to operate with more precision and provide a more cosmetic approach to surgery. Before your procedure, your surgeon will plan their surgical approach for removing the seed and tumor. Once removed, they take measurements of the margins surrounding the tumor to ensure that enough tissue was removed along with the seed.

How It Works
Sirius Pintuition is powered by GPSDetect. This state-of-the-art software is the only wire-free localization technology designed to provide navigational guidance that is both intuitive and easy to use. It supports our surgeons with visual and audio feedback for real-time directional guidance, allowing them to locate tumors more easily with unmatched precision.
The Seed
The Pintuition Seed is a tiny but powerful magnet that marks the tumor. Tumors are hard to locate in the early stages of their development, but this seed helps our surgeons find them easily and remove them from any direction.
The seed comes in the form of high-grade, nickel-free biocompatible titanium that:
- Can’t be deactivated
- Can be detected in fluid
- Doesn’t lose signal over time
Navigation
The GPSDetect software guides our surgeons through audio and visual direction feedback. This allows them to find the precise location of the tumor more easily and accurately than ever before. With the TargetLOC feature, your surgeon can visualize when the probe is perfectly aligned with the seed.
Sirius Pintuition FAQ

Why Is There a Need for a New Technology in Breast Cancer Surgery?

The ability to diagnose tumors at increasingly early stages has been a huge benefit to patients. Unfortunately, these early-stage tumors can’t be felt or seen during surgery, leading surgeons to resort to metal anchor wires to localize tumors and soft tissue.
This method for removing tumors isn’t ideal since it:
- May result in surgery delays
- Doesn’t provide the best cosmetic results
- Creates more pain and stress for patients
How Does the Sirius Pintuition Benefit Patients?
Sirius Pintuition provides many more benefits for patients than traditional wire. It allows more scheduling flexibility for patients since it can be implanted by a radiologist up to 30 days before surgery. This can be done on the same day when you have another appointment, allowing you to reduce your number of hospital visits.
With Sirius Pintuition, you don’t have to worry about metal anchor wire protruding from your chest on the day of your surgery. This is both painful and stressful, adding even more difficulty to an already difficult experience. It also allows your surgeon to take the most cosmetic surgical approach and preserve the tissue that you have.
How Does the Sirius Pintuition Benefit Breast Surgeons?
The Sirius Pintution benefits surgeons in a few key ways. It allows our surgeons to decide where to make the incision without being restricted by where the wire has been inserted. With this new device and software, surgeons take a more intuitive approach to the procedure where they can pinpoint and remove the tumor with navigational guidance.
